AROUND MT HOOD IN EASY STAGES
The Timberline Trail circling Mt Hood is one of the most spectacular hiking trails in the world. The 41-mile trail runs mostly at the timber line and drops in and out of canyons carved by the rivers that flow from the many glaciers on the mountain. Over the 41-mile trail, the total elevation gain is about 9000 ft with the lowest point at 3200 ft and the highest point at 7560 ft.
Our purpose in writing this book is to show how the Timberline Trail can readily be broken down into 1-way day hikes using car shuttles and car swaps. The 41-mile circle is divided into 8 segments and detailed descriptions are provided about how to reach the trailheads, and the pros and cons of hiking each segment in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
“For a book so small that is fits into a [large] shirt pocket, it contains as much or more information than most others double its size and weight. It is for sure, a guide book deserving to be treated to a hike.
The book is essentially a hiker's guide which has divided the 40+ mile Timberline Trail into eight segments; then describes each segment along with the access trails needed to reach the points of entry and exit to each section. Most are fairly long one-day hikes and a car swap or shuttle is needed.
'Around Mt. Hood in Easy Stages' is a wonderful little book, remarkably detailed. It contains maps, directions, mileages (both highway and trail) for the hikes, plus many admirable line drawings of native plants, flowers, trees, and significant sights along the way - elevations and difficulties that might be encountered have not been forgotten. It tells you what to wear, what to bring, and even contains a section on business resources in the area (restaurants, inns, lodges, markets, etc.) This 1997 edition is so up-to-date that the new Mazama Trail has a niche of its own.”
- The Mazamas, Book Pick of 1998
